Students from San Diego State, UCSD, UCLA and UCR rallied on Saturday January 23, 2010 against human right violations and the unjust imprisonment of Judge Birtukan Mideksa, Ethiopia’s prominent opposition party leader.

About noon today, a group of protestors against the current Ethiopian government gathered at the corner of Liberty and Fifth avenues Downtown, seeking fair elections in that country and release of an imprisoned opposition leader, Birtukan Mideksa, a 35-year-old former judge and mother of a 4-year-old child who has been sentenced to life in prison by thegovernment of prime minister Meles Zenawi.

Ethiopians in Atlanta and surrounding states marked Birtukan’s first year in Prison in a candle light vigil and town hall meeting held on Sunday, December 27, 2009.  In this well-attended gathering, Ethiopians living in South Carolina and Amnesty International representatives from the Atlanta Office, Georgia State University, as well as Washington DC were present to voice their solidarity with Ms Birtukan Mideksa and demand her release from prison.

የፐርዝ ከተማ ኗሪ የሆኑ ኢትዮጵያውያን ማክሰኞ ዲሴምበር 23 ቀን 2009 በምእራብ አውስትራሊያ መስተዳድር፤ የአምኔስቲ ኢንተርናሽናል ጽሕፈት ቤት የሻማ ማብራት ምሽት በማካሄድና፤ በርቱካንን እና ሌሎች የፖለቲካ እስረኞችን ለማስፈታት በዓለም ዙሪያ ከተጀመረው እንቅስቃሴ ጋር የተቀናጀ ዘማቻ በመክፈት የተሳካ ዝግጅት አካሂደዋል።

On September 13, 2009, thousands participated in the 8th Annual Cultural Street Festival in the heart of Little Ethiopia.

Birtukan has been nominated for person of the Year Award.  This award ceremony will be held on September 6, 2009 in Vancouver, Canada.
