"and ...that "opposition UDJ party president Birtukan Mideksa, whose pardon was revoked and life sentence reinstate in December 2008, remain in prison throughout the year. She was held in solitary confinement . . . despite a court ruling that indicate it was a violation of her constitutional rights"

United State Senators Feingold and Leahy have introduced a new legislation titled, Support for Democracy and Human Rights in Ethiopia Act of 2010. In addition to exposing the gross human rights violations being committed in Ethiopia, the bill is unique in singling out the plight of Ms Birtukan Mideksa.  It is to be recalled that Ms Mideksa has been in prison since December 28, 2008.

UNHCR declares Birtukan Mideksa in arbitrary detention Print
Written by UNHRC

"Ms. Birtukan Mideksa | Detention arbitrary, categories II and III; since 29 December 2009 also category I."   Page 10 of the report.

Recommendations (excerpt...)

"The immediate release of a person arbitrarily detained is typically the appropriate remedy, not only if the detention is arbitrary in terms of categories I and II as being manifestly devoid of any legal basis or resulting from the exercise of certain human rights, but also in terms of category III, given the grave nature of violations of the right to fair trial established by the Working Group when applying category III."

Senators Finegold, Isackson, Leahy, and Durbin concerned about situation in Ethiopia Print

First, we are concerned by the re-arrest of Unity for Democracy and Justice Party leader Birtukan Midekssa and reports that her life sentence in prison has been reinstated. As you know, a political opposition with the right to freedom of speech, press and association is essential to any vibrant democracy. We worry that Birtukan's re-arrest signals your government's waning commitment to those democratic principles. This is a disappointing signal in advance of your country's elections next year, which we believe have great potential.
